Plumbing Maintenance to do in the Fall

Posted on

To keep your plumbing system working properly, it needs to be maintained and repaired on a regular basis. When the fall season is approaching, this is a great time to do some maintenance, especially before you start experiencing cooler temperatures. Here are some maintenance tasks to do in the fall with your plumbing system.

Check the Exterior Faucets

Since the temperatures are probably going to drop during the fall season, especially if you live in a colder climate, you should start the seasonal maintenance by checking outdoor faucets. Disconnect the water hoses outside of your home so you can prevent your faucets from freezing. You should also make sure there aren't any drips or leaks of the outdoor faucets, which can also cause freezing problems of the pipes and a variety of other issues.

Clear Your Blocked Drains

It is tempting to let slow drains simply remain how they are if they aren't making a big impact in your daily life, but these blocked drains are a sign of something that is wrong. Even a shower drain that is just a little slower than normal means that there is something blocking that drain, which might be hair or debris. You should have the drains cleared out so that the water runs freely in order to prevent more serious damage. Call up a plumber to clear the blocked drains if you can't seem to clear them on your own.

Clean out the Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal deals with a lot of smelly waste throughout the year, so it should be cleaned on a regular basis. When the seasons change, it is the perfect time to clean it out. In the fall, you will probably do more cooking and baking, so this is a great time to start deodorizing and cleaning the garbage disposal. To do this, all you need to do is pour some baking soda down the drain, then let it sit for a few minutes. While you are waiting, have a pot of water on the stove boiling. Pour the boiling water over the baking soda, turn on the water on the faucet, then turn on the garbage disposal. This will help to clean the garbage disposal and make it smell much better. You can also put some lemon wedges into the drain.
